Hardcore, More Than Music!

…Animal, earth and human liberation will only come through education… (Chokehold)

Despite what you may think, hardcore is more than just music! The MoreThanMusic tent is a free space for free thinking and discussion, for debate and creativity in changing our world for the better and for Non-Governmental Organisations & Action Groups to present themselves. We believe that music can make a difference, can make make people think and talk and act or at least do something… Where music on stage fails to bring the message across, we try to fill the void and we’ve once again put together a series of non-musical activities to feed the minds of the politically, socially and ethically active people and to educate those who are oblivious to the matter. Check it out from time to time, feed your head, feel free to discuss… You’re in for some leftist shit! Enjoy!

Be sure to visit the Oxfam Fairtrade Bar and Vegan Snackshop in the MoreThanMusic tent!

Check the message board in front of the MTM-Stage for a daily update. (Very) subject to change.

11h.> Meeting DeWereldMorgen / MTMcinema

Alternative Media Coverage by DeWereldMorgen.be

Ieperfest will be covered by a group of independent journalists/media activists from the alternative media collective called DeWereldMorgen (TheWorldTomorrow). In a society where traditional media tend to commercialize and avoid social coverage, DeWereldMorgen is an independent organisation that brings daily and reliable news on what’s going (wr)on(g) in our society. By not accepting commercialization for what it is (unbridled capitalism / the root of all evil), DeWereldMorgen can concentrate on what’s really important, on what you should know about this complex world we are all living in. It's a free news website based on the work of volunteers who publish their own news about activism and social movements.

On Ieperfest they will be working as a team, meeting every morning at 11h. to discuss and divide the work, and to publish their pictures and articles of the festival on www.dewereldmorgen.be

And you can join them! If you’d also like to do a report on Ieperfest through your pictures, video, interviews, texts,… and get your stuff posted on DeWereldMorgen.be: great! Meet us at the MTM-stage at 11h. or contact “keltoumATdewereldmorgen.be” first with your motivation.

DeWereldMorgen is very keen on doing live interviews & open discussions with bands, NGO’s & Action Groups on Ieperfest and to discuss some of the topics presented in the MoreThanMusic-tent. Do join us if you feel like you can contribute! You’re very welcome.

MTMcinema

Ranging from animal and human rights films to documentary films about ecology, social movements, action groups and even some rare footage of underground gigs from all over the world, this might turn out to be quite the cinematic experience – hence MTMcinema.

13h.> Fairfin presentation (by Leen & Marjon)

Fairfin Logo

FairFin is a Belgian NGO promoting an alternative approach to money.

Since the financial crisis started in 2008, financial themes have been on the news around the clock. Yet the financial sector seems further away from society than it ever was. Whereas governments take ages to decide on policies concerning social security or the environment, a bank can be saved overnight. In the meantime, those banks did not take (nor were they asked to make) the slightest efforts to become more ethical: bankers quickly got back to business as usual, including speculating on food and large casino operations, just to make as much profit as possible. FairFin wants society to regain its grip on banks, by pushing forward the need of investments in real economy and stressing democratic decision making when it comes to financial matters. The financial system is too important to be left in the hands of bankers alone.

With their campaign Tame the Banking Creature (Tem het Bankwezen), FairFin wants to feed the discussion on the financial crisis and hand tools to let citizens express their indignation.

In a short presentation, FairFin will explain the set-up and thoughts behind their campaign as well as suggest ways to join in.

17h.> Legal!/Hemp Presentation (by Luc)

Legal poster

We are very honoured to have Luc Vankrunkelsven here at Ieperfest presenting his new book: ‘Legal! Optimism –Reality - Hope’ and he sure knows a thing or two about the connection between soy, deforestation in Brasil and meat consumption.

The current threat of any 'sustainable development' being occupied by the industry as a ‘green economy’ is a hard one to tackle! Take Biodiesel for example; the industry is working very hard to convince us (consumers) that we can buy certain products and that we are actually doing something good for the environment. Wrong! Green capitalism is still capitalism and will destroy our earth unless we stop it now!

In a very basic presentation Luc will make (sometimes hard to understand) topics like Greenwashing, WTO, nanotechnology and food sovereignty very clear with short stories and pictures from his recent trip to Brasil. And he is also bringing the Hemp (Ganja! Weed!) suitcase along as one of many alternatives… Hooray!

Just so you know: ‘Legal!’ has a double meaning in the Portuguese language: apart from just meaning ‘legal’ it also means ‘Fun!’. So, landowners in Brasil might say: ‘All that we do, deforestation for example, is legal!...’.

13h.> Speciesism / Vegan Ethics presentation (by Tim)

The Ieperfest Crew likes to invite you to this presentation to explain why we promote a vegan lifestyle (by offering vegan food) apart from the ecological concern.

The term “speciesism” has been around since 1973. Veganism even longer: the word and the ethics behind it saw the daylight in 1944. Many decades have since passed, yet their true meaning is often unknown or unclear. Through this presentation you will receive to-the-point information on what both mean, and why they are connected to each other. Questions and Answers.

Presentation in english
Duration: depending on the audience (Q&A).

17h.> Sea Shepherd presentation (by Catherine)

Seashephard

Catherine Mansart, former ship manager :
“Sea Shepherds Mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans and to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Even with some laws in place, governments lack the backbone to actually enforce their laws on the high seas. So what they won’t do, we will!
It’s five to twelve for the oceans. Something needs to be done if governments don’t take responsibilities towards their and international waters. Within 20 years the oceans will be empty. There will be no more fish to eat. There will be no more ecosystem to keep our planet in balance. If the oceans die, we all go down with it.
At the moment this booklet goes to print, news has just reached us that Paul Watson escaped his house arrest in Germany after waiting patiently since May 2012. This bogus extradition to Costa Rica has enraged many people. SSCS was asked by the Costa Rican government to work with them against the illegal shark fin poaching maffia because the country couldn’t get the trade under control. SSCS gladly helped out. Now Paul Watson is facing charges for helping that same Costa Rican government. Of course this is completely ridiculous.
Come join us for a short presentation, some personal anecdotes, photos and a debate on how we contribute in our own ways. What makes sense and what doesn’t. We’ll be glad to hear your opinion.”

21h.> Film/Documentary Just Do It!

JUST DO IT, a tale of modern-day outlaws (Emily James, 91 min.)
JUST DO IT is an observational documentary from award winning filmmaker Emily James, who gained exceptional access to the environmental direct action movement in the UK. The film gives us the first ever insight into the lives of activists, focusing particularly on active members of Plane Stupid and Climate Camp. For an entire year Emily submerged herself in documenting their secret activities, getting to know and understand their motivation and their passion. We follow inspiring and entertaining individuals who are not prepared to sit back and allow the destruction of the world’s ecosystems and climate. In the tradition of the suffragettes and the civil rights movement, the characters have picked up the mantle of civil disobedience and direct action; they have super-glued themselves to bank trading floors, blockaded factories with D-locks and tents and attacked coal power stations en-masse, despite the very real threat of arrest.

The Ieperfest crew likes to add: “very inspiring and we would love the film to encourage other people (you!) to join in on the fun!”

13h.> Green IEPERFEST, the presentation

Groen Event

If all goes well, if we find the time and extreme weather conditions do not call for extreme measures, the Ieperfest-crew invites you once again to a presentation on “green” IEPERFEST (just like last year, but now with a few extra’s).

Ieperfest is known as a quality festival, organised by 2 Belgian not-for-profit organisations, which share both their geographical background and ideology: Republyk Vort’n Vis & Genet Records. We keep our ecological footprint as small as possible and we strongly support fairtrade. These values are an inherent part of the festival and are therefore (in)directly communicated to our public.

To satisfy the hunger of both the public and the artists, Ieperfest has chosen since day one to have an entirely vegan kitchen. An environmentally friendly, healthy and animal friendly choice to which we stay loyal.

These values didn’t escape the ‘outside world’, and this is clear from the fact that Ieperfest stood on the highest stage for the first GREENEVENT AWARD 2010. This prize was handed out by OVAM (the Public Flemish Waste Management Company) to the greenest event in Flanders. We also received the GREENEVENT AWARD 2011 for our continued efforts on the winter edition of our festival...

What made us win those greenevent awards? What are we doing exactly?
What can you do as organisers of a festival or as individuals? Questions&Answers. Tips&Tricks.
Feel free to comment, to express your thoughts on IEPERFEST or to voice your ideas. You’re very welcome!

Bookfair / NGO-stands

We believe that animal, earth and human liberation will only come through education, so Independent editors and distributors, Zines, NGO's and Action groups from around the world are more than welcome to set up a stand near the MoreThanMusic-stage. We also invite NGO’s and Action Groups to mount the stage and to educate the masses.

This is the place to be for critical, counter-current books and publications, vegan and sweatshop free clothing & accessories, cool stickers, posters, and what not… This stuff is hard to find in mainstream bookstores and shops. Copyleft not Copyright!

You might want to check out the following stands (and maybe even more) on Ieperfest (subject to change):

Oxfam Fairtrade Bar

Do we really need to introduce Oxfam Fairtrade to you? We hope not, but here goes:
Oxfam Fairtrade is a wholesaler in fair trade food products.

At the current market price, farmers selling their coffee, cacao and sugar do not get sufficient income. Oxfam Fairtrade is fighting against this unfair situation.

Oxfam Fairtrade buys products from organised small or medium-sized producer organisations in the South, paying them a fair price. This fair price is often higher than the current market price and ensures a decent income for the producers.

By collaborating with Oxfam the producer can invest in:

  • better agricultural techniques
  • product development
  • training and education
  • health care
  • housing
  • infrastructure

Oxfam Fairtrade works only with approved producer organisations that are monitored by the non-profit organisation Oxfam-Wereldwinkels.

Apart from a medium-sized Oxfam Bar where you’ll find all the Oxfam-cans (biocola, bio-ice tea & biolemonade(!)), a wide range of (vegan) Oxfam products will also be available at a fair price in the MoreThanMusic Tent, you lucky bastards!

Vegan Snackshop

Ieperfest surely is vegan heaven! Go check out the Vegan Snackshop inside the MoreThanMusic-tent for vegan chocolate, energy bars, your daily need for nuts & fruits, organic drinks and what not… (and say hi to Barb & Sam;)

Ieperfest Zine Library

A decent collection of Zines from around the world. There will be a really cozy reading room near the MTM-stage (thanks to Kringloopwinkel West). Feel free to read’em here, but put’em back, thanks! We kindly ask everyone who makes musical or pure political zines to bring 2 copies to the tent right next to the distro tent (the MTM-stage). Your zine will be available for everyone to read for the duration of the festival and then taken up into the Ieperfest Zine Library for future editions. A great chance for you to spread the DIY ethics and ideas of our movement and to present your work. If you would like to keep feeding the Ieperfest Zine Library with your zine, please contact us at ‘xpositiveheartxATtelenet.be’ or send them to Ieperfest Zine Library, Postbus 42- 8900 Ieper/Belgium
